Pansies
Want beautiful color right now? Look no further than the tough, cold-tolerant, and colorful pansy. Available in many shades of blue, yellow and purple; pansies are the perfect introduction to spring gardening. Our pansies are all fresh and especially healthy as they are grown locally at our own growing division in Woburn, MA.
Favorable Conditions
Pansies bloom best in sun to partial shade. Ideally, 4 hours of sunlight is best. They also prefer cool growing temperatures 40-70 degrees F. Morning sun with some afternoon shade is an excellent growing site. However, they can tolerate warmer exposures and will bloom longer if planted in evenly moist, well-drained, nutrient rich soil. They make excellent container garden or bedding plants, and attract butterflies with their light fragrance.
Planting
Pansy container gardens are perfect for dressing up entry ways or window boxes. Be sure to change out old soil and provide your pansies with a good potting mix like Mahoney’s Premium Potting Soil. It is best to give your pansies an initial feeding with a slow-release granular like Osmocote. Follow up feedings can be done with a water-soluble mix like the organic Neptune’s Harvest. We carry all of the necessary products to ensure a beautiful display including a vast selection of containers and pottery.
Maintaining
Other than watering and fertilizing, mentioned above, the large flower pansies do look best when they are deadheaded (removing the spent flowers and its stem) before they begin to form seeds. Pinching is fine, or you can use scissors/pruners to remove the faded flowers.
