How can I eliminate invasive wild rose plants?
Question
How can I eliminate invasive wild rose plants?
Additional Details
These wild roses have roots that are entwined with those of a favored spirea bush. The invasive roses are gradually overtaking the spirea. I have reached inside the spirea to cut the wild rose branches and have cut the main stalk all the way to the ground. How can I kill the rose roots without damaging the intertwined spirea roots. I have several other cases like this in my yard.
Answer
You can paint with a brush a Stump and Vine killer onto the stems of the wild rose. (carefull not to have it drip or touch any other plant). This will be absorb into the roots of the rose. The other way is to wait till fall and dig out the spirea and other shrubs then remove the wild rose and replant the shrubs. If you can manage the rose till late summer / fall it will be the best time to do any of these solutions. We do not want the shrubs to stress coming into the summer months. Wraping the rose stump in black plastic and sealing it with tape may help keep the rose from producing. Let me know how you make out.
